“What’s makes great directors: not only knowing what to tell but also when to tell it!”

Kevin Spacey, American actor, film director, producer, screenwriter and singer

As directors are nothing than professional feedback-providers this might apply to other feedback-related positions as well: mentors, coaches, teachers, managers, …

In many cases your input/feedback is even THE most valuable work you do + it has a huge impact on the result itself:

  • What, how and when a doctor says something to his patient heavily influences the healing process…
  • What how and when a photographer commands something to the model impacts the picture…
  • What, how and when a coach interacts with his/her athletes influences their performance…

Giving feedback is difficult - no doubt…

But it is one of the few things that CAN MAKE THINGS BETTER! Therefore it is worth thinking about what to tell - and when!

How To Become Awesome

Source for this post is this TED Talk by Tasha Eurich: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVPxmz_PvUw

image

Step 1:

Open up for feedback and accept the fact that you are NOT perfect - yet.
Try to understand that there are skills and characteristics you are lacking or own untapped potential in.

Step 2:

Think about a certain behavior/skill/habit that would significantly change you for the better. Ask yourself “What habits/doings/actions/skills would make me a better leader/person/dad/bartender/…?”

Step 3:

List what you can come up with.

Step 4:

Rate each listed item from 1 to 10 - depending on “how close to awesome would I come mastering this skill/habit/…?”

Step 5:

Pick the ONE rated highest and work on it - every single day.

Best of luck!

“Pauses turn noise into music.”

no doubt: work/hustle/grind/… is THE foundation of success. But realistically you cannot grind grind grind and nothing but grind.

Unless you are robot you are going to need a few hours of sleep and breaks to eat and some pauses to think in order to come up with new solutions… You need time - for example to react to things coming your way - and so do all your employees, customers and partners…

It is fairly simple:

Work is key, but as with music, it is the breaks and pauses that that turn all the busyness into business.

The money you are paid by the company you work for will always be in direct ratio to

1. the need for what you do,
2. your ability to do it, and
3. the degree of difficulty involved in replacing you.

According to my personal experiences this quote says it all. I have not found any other explanation summing up the topic of salary as good as this one…

(Why I always try to keep these things in mind when making career decisions!)

Your Life is…

How to reach your goals

Short answer: vine by vine.

Explanation:

I heard about this concept called the “Tarzan Method”

(Casey Neistat covers it his Vlog - the entire video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7HF4peQxeXA)

Here is the important sequence (told by #CaseyNeistat himself).

In a nutshell - that is how you get to where you want to be:

(perspective: Bird’s eye view)

Why this idea resonates with me:
It describes the truth - at least according to what I experienced in my life.

And it contains another insight that you need to be aware of in order to succeed someday - again a picture:

… just as true as the picture above…

What you might like to take away from this post:

  • There are no straight lines in life. Get comfortable with taking a detour once in a while…
  • Getting closer to your goal might feel like failure - don’t give up though.
  • Embrace to where your current vine is taking you - even if it pulling you more sideways that forward…
  • The key question for you should always be: “Which vine is my next one?” Don’t think too much about the rest of the way. Just take one right vine after another…
  • On the day you reach your final goal - you will be able to connect the dots backwards. Trust me.

Having said that, this is what you should do next:

Save vines and good luck.
